Mentioned only once in the OT, at Gen 10:10, Akkad (or Accad) was, together with Babylon, Erech, and Calneh, "the first centres" of Nimrod's kingdom in Shinar, i.e., Babylonia. Neither the location of the city or the extent of its influence in ancient times can be determined with certainty. The fact that the name was used often in contrast to Sumer suggests that it was not insubstantial.
