Anabaptists

The Reformation in Europe in the 16th Cent caused a revision in many of the traditions that had been taken for granted by the Church. The Anabaptists represented a radical (left) wing of the Reformation in their denouncement of infant baptism that had been the standard practice in the Church until then. In the more fervant churches of this movement adults who had been baptized as infants were required to be 're-baptized' or face being branded as the "ungodly" and be slaughtered unless they fled for refuge elsewhere.
