Elder brother of Herod the Great, Phasael was, together with Hyrcanus, was taken captive by the Pathians in their invasion of Judea in 40 BC. According to Josephus, Phasael, recognizing that he would not be set free and he not willing to die at the hands of his enemies, took his own life by bashing his head against the stone walls of his prison.
