Sabellianism - Modalism

The teaching—motivated by the attempt to maintain the unity of the Godhead, and considered heretical—that the Trinity is simply three different modes or aspects of the Godhead.

The heresy continues to find popular expression in the use of water in its three different aspects—gas (steam), liquid (water) and solid (ice)—as an illustration of the Trinity.

The name Sabellianism is derived from Sabellius, a Roman theologian from 3rd Cent.
