The name of this church means St Peter at the Crowing of the Cock, and recalls Peter's three-fold denial of his Master "this very night, before the rooster crows," at the house of the high priest (Matt 26:75; Mk 14:72; Lk 22:61). Christian traditions place the High Priest Chaiaphas' house in this location. More substantial archaeological findings locate Chaiaphas' house further up the hill.
