This gate has been sealed for many centuries. The origin of this gate and its name is unresolved. One suggestion proposes that the name came about when the Greek name horaia, which means 'beautiful' (Acts 3 mentions Peter healing the cripple at the gate called 'Beautiful') was confused by later Latin speakers for aurea, which means "golden." It opens—if it is ever to open—directly onto the Temple Mount.

Jewish traditions believe that this is the gate through which the Messiah will enter to claim the City when he comes. The tombs at the foot of the Gate are Muslim, intended to frustrate the Messiah's mission since the path is now ritually defiled. Such is the animosity between the two, a dire warning to all who would seek God how easily passion can empty itself of all that matters to God.
