Jerusalem's most prestigious hotel, the King David is situated outside the Old City and on the other side of the Hinnom valley.
The hotel served as the military police headquarters during the British Mandate. A team from the Jewish terroritst organization Irgun, led by Menahem Begin (who became Israeli PM, 1977-83), planted a bomb in the hotel that killed 91 persons on 22 July 1946.
The protruding tower belongs to the YMCA across the road from the hotel. It was designed by Arthur Harmon, the architect who also designed the Empire State Building, New York. When it opened in 1933 it was the tallest building in Jerusalem.
