1Daripadaa Paulus yang dengan kehendak Allah telah dilantik sebagai rasul Kristus Yesus, dan daripadaa Sostenes, saudara kita,b
a. daripada - As the Greek text shows, NT letters normally open with the name of the sender, and is so understood as a matter of custom. The preposition "from" is not necessary. The addition of "daripada" may clarify this matter for readers in cultures where such a custom is not understood. This is not an issue most of the time, as in "daripada Paulus". ". . . dan daripada Sostenes," however, gives a misaligned sense and fails to capture the nuance of the verse precisely enough. ". . . dan daripada Sostenes" gives the impression that Sosthenes was co-author with Paul. As the commentary argues, this is very unlikely to be the case. Perhaps it is better to preserve the ambiguity about Sosthenes's role in the origin of the letter intact by translating the last phrase simply "dan Sostenes" instead.
b. saudara kita - In the Greek text Sosthenes is identified simply as ho adelphos, "the brother." Sosthenes must have been so well-known among the Christians in Corinth that he was simply "the" brother. In a language such as BM, which has not specific word to indicate the definite, this is trickly. "Abang Sostenes" may be too casual for most people but probably captures better the sentiments involved.
