1:10-12 — 10I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. 11My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12What I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul"; another, "I follow Apollos"; another, "I follow Cephas"; still another, "I follow Christ."

Paul dives into the deep end of the major problem troubling the church in Corinth with an open appeal for unity. The appeal is framed in a chiasmus:

A. that all of you agree . . . in what you say,

B. that there be not divisions among you,

A'. that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.

Chloe is mentioned only here in the NT, and it is from members of her family that Paul learned of the quarrels among different factions in the church in Corinth. With so sparse of details it is possible for commentators to suggest that she was either an acquaintance of Paul in Ephesus whose family members travelled to or were residents of Corinth and they had visited Chloe through whom they came into contact with Paul with the news, or she was a resident of Corinth and a member of the church there, but was rich and influential enough so that Paul could feel confident enough that his mention of her name in the letter would not have impacted negatively her standing in the church. At any rate her identity is unimportant; the point being that the news that Paul had heard was attributable and, therefore, presumed to be reliable. The actual conversations between these informers and Paul may have named specific persons involved in the quarrals. If they were, Paul thinks it wise not to name them; doing so would probably inflame the dialogue in the letter. Instead Paul uses teachers well-known to the church as identifying markers for the different groups. It did not matter that none of these named were not actual participants in the quarrels, they serve to make the point.
