Analysis

Following the conventions of Hellenistic letter writing, Paul now identifies the recipient of his letter. The first eight words (te ekklesia . . . Korintho) would have suffice. Paul has, however, taken the tradition and enriched it with his own peculiar theological flourishes. These flourishes are, however, not done for their own sake; they set the theological framework within which we can understand Paul's perception of his relationship with the church and, therefore, the contours of his discourse (for more on this see the main commentary, or see Sentence Diagram).
