Notes for Author & Origin

1. The same expression was used by Moses, e.g., in 3:20 & 25 and 11:30 when he referred to the land that the Israelites were soon to conquer "west of the Jordan."

2. J. G. McConville, "Deuteronomy" in New Bible Commentary: 21st Century Edition, ed. by G. J. Wenham, J. A. Motyer, D. A. Carson, and R. T. France (Leicester/ Downers Grove: IVP Academic, 1994). McConville has a sixth point, that Deuteronomy "formally resembles certain political treaties made by Hittite kings . . . Deuteronomy resembles the Hittite treaties from 1400 to 1200 BC, which according to more conservative scholars is the time that Moses lived." We will say more about this point under Deuteronomy & Ancient Near Eastern Treaties.
