Notes for Deut 1:1-2

1. opposite Suph, between Paran . . . and Dizahab — these places served originally to locate more precisely where the event took place. None of these places, however, can now be identified with any certainly. There is a little village called Zahab on the east coast of the Sinai Peninsula, just about where the modern road from St Catherine joins the coastal road, but it cannot be sure if it can be identified with Dizahab.

2. V2 is often printed within brackets in many translations. The brackets are quite un-necessary, adding nothing useful to the understanding of the text.

3. Though the fact that Moses' address was given forty years later has so far not been mentioned in these two verses, remember that the narrator was writing for an Israelite audience who would know this fact well. A new comer to the book will have to wait until v3 where this fact is recalled.
