3:29 - So we stayed in the valley near Beth Peor.
While bringing this section of Moses's first address to a close, this geographical note also locates Beth Peor as the place where the rest of the events recorded in the book of Deuteronomy unfold. In this way it serves as the literary link to the rest of Deuteronomy. 4:46 suggests that Beth Peor was located in the conquered territory that once belonged to Sihon. Beth Peor is probably to be distinguished from Baal Peor, a site that takes its name from the events in which Israel allowed herself to be tempted into the pagan worship of Baal Peor (Num.25:3, 5; Hos.9:10).
