As explained under Reading Deuteronomy (☰), Deuteronomy had three "audiences." In this commentary we designate them as GenA, GenB and GenN; briefly, they are:
GenA : the generation who left Egypt as adults and who died out during the forty years of wandering in the wilderness. They are mentioned in Deuteronomy only in Moses's recall of events past.
GenB : the generation who left Egypt as children or who were born in the days of the wandering, and who were the original addressees of Moses' expositions on the plains of Moab.
GenN: the generation/audience for whom the narrator has compiled the book of Deuteronomy; they would originally have lived in the conquered Promised Land though we cannot pinpoint the time specifically. By extention—by the fact that we worship the same God as they did—we also are included in this audience.
