2:4a - This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created.
[T - OL ]
This part of a verse, and esp. the expression "heaven and earth," serves—as we have observed in the introduction—to "book-end" the account and bring it to a closure, while the second half of the verse—with the expression reversed ("the earth and the heavens") and the name of God changed from 'elohim to Yahweh 'elohim, 'Lord God'—signals the beginning of the next part of the story, to which we can now turn.
