Notes for Introduction

1. We recognize the fact that the use of the expression "this is the account of" is normally used to introduce rather than conclude a narrative. Gen 2:4 is, therefore, supposed to introduce the next section. We suggest, however, that in this case, 2:4 has been deliberated formulated to serve double-duty as a janus, with the expression "heavens and earth" in v4a looking back to Chap 1, which it also book-ends with 1:1, and the reversed expression "earth and heavens" in v4b serving to look forward to Chap 2-3. This is substantiated by the observation that "the heavens and earth"—with the accent on 'the heavens'—is the appropriate expression to describe the more comprehensive perspective of Chap 1, and "the earth and heavens"—with the accent on 'the earth'—the more "land-horizoned" perspective of Chaps 2-3.
