Melchizedek Blesses Abram

In many modern versions this chapter is often given a subtitle like "Abram rescues Lot". And indeed he does, but that is only the context because the key event here in this part of the plot-line is the declaration of blessing by Melchizedek over Abram (vv18-20). The chapter divides naturally into two sections: 1) the capture and rescue of Lot, vv1-12, and 2) Abram's blessing, vv13-24. The chiasmus that holds each section together is clearly visible.

A. The Babylonian kings, v1

B. The Canaanite kings in the Valley of Siddim, v2
