Few books of the Old Testament lends itself to good preaching as the book of Genesis. Unfortunately most sermons based on the book are piece meal, dealing with one story here and another there without taking the narrative flow and the theological thrust of the entire book seriously. There are ways to overcome this shortcoming. Two series of six expository sermons over a year provide an opportunity to explore the book rather well. A teaching weekend built around four or five lectures/sermons that provide an overview of the book in the first lecture, with close-ups on some of the main episodes and ending with a sermon on Sunday. This is something I have done with many churches, and when they open the seminar to other churches as well, they serve also to bring churches together into fellowship centered around the Word.
