Though Calvin is most famous for his Institutes of the Christian Religion, he was first and foremost a biblical scholar. His expositions and commentaries on the books of the Bible far exceed his other writings, as may be evidenced from the following history:
1540 — Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans
1548 — Commentary on all the Epistles of Paul12
1551 — Commentary on the Epistle to the Hebrews, and the Epistles of Peter,John, Jude, and James
1551 — Commentary on Isaiah
1552 — Commentary on the Acts of the Apostles
1554 — Commentary on Genesis
1557 — Commentary on the Psalms
1557 — Commentary on Hosea
1559 — Commentary on the Twelve Minor Prophets
1561 — Commentary on Daniel
1562 — Commentary on Joshua13
1563 — Harmony of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy
1563 — Commentary on Jeremiah
1563 — Harmony of Three Gospels and Commentary on St John.14
His comments are almost always succinct and to the point. Though nearly half a millennium old, they continue to prove useful for Christian reflection, even if, of necessity, his commentaries lack the insights that modern methods of exegesis and scholarship can provide. We hope you will find them stimulating as most Christians through the ages have. The version of his commentary reproduced here differs from most available online; we have decided to not to include the Latin texts of the original and any foreign words are replaced by transliterations instead. Since Calvin's is already in the public domain, and though we have put in a great deal of work to reformat them to make them more friendly, the material here is freely available to anyone who wishes to use them to further God's work; no further request for permission from us is needed, provided they are not for commercial purposes. Calvin, if he had the means to give away his work for free, we believe, he would have done so. The electronic medium allows us to do so.
Hhis commentaries, translated in English from their original Latin, were first published by the Calvin Society. Today most of them may be available in different formats at Christian Classic Ethereal Library.
