Notes for Malachi 1:2b-3

1. In the history of the human-God relationship as reflected in the teachings of the various religions of the world these two affirmations must also count as uniquely central to the Judeo-Christian faith.

2. Pressed by the invasion of Nabatean tribes from the south, the Edomites had pushed west across the Arabah to occupy the southern regions of past Judean territories, which later became known as Idumea. Indeed it was very probably this invasion of her southern borders by Edom that makes what follows about Esau and Edom so poignant and ironic.
