Notes for The Message of the OT

1. This article is essentially a very compacted summary of a 12 three-hourly course that I used to teach in a seminary. Unless otherwise specified, all Scriptural quotations are from the NIV.

2 Tremper Longman III & Daniel Reid,God is a Warrior (SOTBT; Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1995), 13.

3. One way of looking at what these "sons of God" and "daughters of men" were doing is that they represented another attempt to grasp equality with God by a different route.

4. Even in His displeasure God is not distracted from His righteousness to do right by those who are faithful to Him .

5. Anyone familiar with the literature will immediately recognize the great debt I owe David J.A. Clines (The Theme of the Pentateuch (Sheffield: JSOT Press, 1978)) for much of the insights here.

6. I have used the term "Total Depravity" here as a summary of the line "every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time" (6:5). The expression "total depravity" means something else.
