Definite article (ha) with common noun, masculine, plural, absolute.
The word hashshamayim, 'the heavens,' in the Old Testament carries a similar breadth of meanings as the word in the English language; it is the 1) the abode of God, and 2) the created sphere other than the Earth, or 3) simply a synonym for the sky. Elsewhere in this chapter, it is used (another 9x) in contrast to 'the earth,' and refers broadly to all the non-earthly realm of creation, and especially to refer to the sky. In this verse itself, however, it is paired with 'the earth' in a merism to signify the entire cosmos, i.e., all that has been created.
