2. Assyria loses Babylon to Nabopolassar, 626.
Nabopolassar was a Chaldean prince and a new comer to the power-scene. Rebelling against the Assyrians, he laid siege to the city of Babylon in Oct 626, and by Nov had defeated the Assyrians and captured the city, from which he began to establish the neo-Babylonian empire. By 616 he felt strong enough to advance further up the River Euphrates towards the Assyrian heartland, defeating the Assyrian forces in a battle later that year.
