Like the Chaldeans, the Medes had suffered under Assyria. Renewing their old alliances with the Chaldeans, the Medes under the leadership of Cyaxares advance from their homeland around the Caspian Sea and the Zagros Mountains, down the Tigris and capture Ashur, the ancient capital of Assyria. Nabopolassar arrived too late to participate, and so concluded a treaty with Cyaxares.
