7. Egypt defeated at Carchemish, 605 BC.

In the years 609-606, Nabopolassar left the Egyptians in northern Syria alone while he consolidated his gains and fighting in the Armenian mountains to fortify his back northern flank. In the spring of 605 he was ready to expand southwards. A resounding victory at Carchemish by Nebuchadnezzar II (Nabopolassar's son) drove the Egyptians back south. The Egyptians tried to make a stand at Hamath but was defeated there as well. The road was open for an advance into Palestine. Just then Nabopolassar died, and Nebuchadnezzar had to return home.
