The "Law" - Shades of Meaning

The most serious problem with understanding the Bible's teaching about is not what the Bible itself presents per se, though that is in itself serious enough, but with the confusion of what is meant by the word 'law' itself. Here scholars, theologians, and commentators—almost to a man—have behaved like the Israelites in the days of the judges, every man doing what is right in his own eyes. The word is used with no thought that it needed defining and then used in so many different senses at the same time, no one needs to feel ashame if he/she is soon and genuinely confused.

The confusion began, of course, long before the Reformation when the reformers, beginning with Martin Luther, demanded that a distinction be made between law and grace.

Nomos, the Greek word for 'law' occurs just under 200x in thd NT. Not surprisingly, it makes its presence felt most strongly in Galatians (32x) and Romans (74x), respectively the first and probably last letters Paul wrote. A quick survey will reveal that the word encompasses broad shades of meanings.
