This English word normally translates the Heb. toeba, and describes any object that is detestable or abhorent to God. While such objects would include unclean things that pollute, the term is especially applied to objects and practices assoicated with pagan worship. The NIV is less consistent in its translation of this word than most other modern translations; in addition to 'abomination,' therefore, it is also often translated as 'detestable,' 'detestable thing.'
