Any of the various forms of heresy which denies the deity of Christ and saw him simply a man of exceptional virtue but 'adopted' by God into divine sonship, usually seen to have occurred at his baptism or, though less frequently, at his resurrection. Adoptionism was one of the earliest heresies to appear in the history of the Christian Church, but it continues to be found, esp., in the preaching of many North American tele-evangelists and preachers. In the present time, Bart Ehrman is one of the ardant voices to assert that adoptionism was the Church's original christology.
