Amphictyony

A league of neighbouring communities or tribes centered around a temple or cult that was common in many ancient Greek city-states. At one time the concept was borrowed by some biblical scholars as a way of explaining the origin of ancient Israel and her "traditions." The results have largely been found wanting. A more appropriate term for ancient Israel is 'tribal league.'

The origin of the name is uncertain.
