Eldest son of Herod the Great by his first wife Doris, whom he divorced to marry Mariamme, the daughter of Hyrcanus II.

Herod the Great had hoped that getting Mariamme, the daughter of Hyrcanus II (th grandee of the Hasmonean dynasty) to marry him would boost his standing among his Jewish subjects. He put aside his wife Doris to do that, and in doing so, also disavowed his eldest son from the line of succession. When the two sons of Mariamme—Alexander and Aristobulus—were later put to death by Herod, Antipater was brought back into the line of succession. Antipater, however, never succeeded his father. Suspecting his son to be plotting against him Herod put Antipater to death just four or five days before his own death in 4 BC.
