From the Hebrew word 'aqad, "bind," Aqedah is the Jewish shorthand for Gen 22, the chapter narrating the binding of Isaac by his father, Abraham, preparatory to his sacrifice. The event is often understood as the ultimate model of obedience. The Aqedah is the set reading in the synagogue for the second day of the ten-day celebration of the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah) leading to the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur).
Muslim has a similar celebration called the Akidah or Aqidah though they hold that it was Ismael rather than Isaac who was bound.
