Alliteration - Assonance

Alliteration is the recurrence of the same initial sound in words in close succession, such as "Betty bought some butter but the butter Betty bought was bitter." Alliteration, it should be obvious, is effective only when the text is read aloud. Alliteration involves consonants; the same device involving vowels is termed assonance. Alliteration and assonance are powerful devices for calling attention to points because they rattle the normal rhythm of speech and disconcert the hearers into wakefulness.
