Babylonian Kings

6 (7) kings ruled the Neo-Babylonian empire from its inauguration under Nabopolassar in 626 until the fall of Babylon to the Persians in 538.

1. Nabopolassar - 626-605 BC :

609 BC : Josiah is killed in battle by Neco, king of Egypt. His son Jehoahaz succeeds him but soon dies and is succeeded by Jehoiakim.

2. Nebuchadnezzar II - 605-562 BC. (more)

605 BC : Battle of Carchemish; Daniel and his friends taken to Babylon.

597 BC : Jehoiakim dies; his son Jehoiachin ascends the throne but is soon taken prisoner to Babaylon, and his uncle Zedekiah made king. Ezekiel is also taken into exile at this time.

587 BC : Nebuchadnezzer sacks Jerusalem.

3. Amel-Marduk (Evil-Merodach) - 562-560 BC. (more)

562 BC : Jehoiachin is released from prison and given a favoured place at the king's table.

4. Neriglissar - 560-556 BC.

5. Labashi-Marduk - 556 BC.

6. Nabonidus - 556-539 BC; though Belshazzar was the one acting on his behalf most of the time in Babylon, but especially when Babylon fell to the Persians in 538. (more)
