Like all people in all cultures, the ancient Israelites have their own customs for dealing with the dead, and these customs do not only change over time but also differ depending on the wealth and social standing of the dead. Because Hebrew traditions prohibit cremation, burial was the custom for dealing with the dead. Christians are familiar with gospel stories of Jesus being buried in a tomb whose entrance was covered with a stone. Most ancient Israelites and Jews were not buried in such tombs, however.
