Cana

A small town in Lower Galilee, and not far from Nazareth most famouly remembered for the fact that Jesus performed his first two miracles there. The first happened at the wedding when Jesus, upon his mother's request, performed turned water into wine (Jn 2:1-11). Some time later Jesus visited the town again, when "a certain royal official" came to him begging him to heal his son who was sick in Capernaum. Jesus told the official, "You may go. Your son will live." The official took Jesus at his words and soon he received news that his son had healed about the same time Jesus had commanded him (Jn 4:46-54). Cana is mentioned a third time but only incidentally, indicating Nathanael's domicile.

The exact location of Cana is debated. Almost every tourist to modern Israel are taken to the modern town of that name where they could visit a number of churches commemorating Jesus's miracle at the wedding and where, for a small fee, those already married may renew their marriage vows and receive a certificate authenticating their feat there. Most scholars think that the original site is yet to be determined.
