The feast that celebrates the purification of Mary and the presentation of the infant Jesus in the temple (Lk 2:22-38).
The name Candlemas is used by Western churches (Roman Catholic and Anglican) and originated from the procession of lighted candles before they were placed on the altar. The Meeting, recalling the meeting of Jesus and Simeon, is used in Eastern churches.
