The name given by church historians to to three theologians from the province of Cappadocia who lived in the 4th Cent. They are Basil of Caesarea, his brother Gregory of Nyssa, and Basil's close friend Gregory of Nyzianzus. Together they were instrumental in giving the definitive shape to the Greek doctrine of the Trinity, and in bringing about the final defeat of Arianism.
