Baptist missionary to India.
Though he was born into an Anglican family, he became a convinced Baptist in 1783. He was instrumental in the founding of the Baptist Missionary Society in 1792, and became its first missionary the following year when he sailed for India. His translation of the New Testment in Bengali was published in 1801, and of the entire Bible in 1809. When Fort William College was opened in Calcutta, he served as professor of Sanskrit, Bengali, and Marathi. His other works include translations of large parts of the Bible into some 24 other languages or dialects.
