The word "Messiah" and its Greek equivalent, "Christ," is derived from the Hebrew noun mashiach, someone—most frequently the king—who has been ritually rubbed with oil to signify that he had been set aside as elected by God to serve Him in that office. 'Christ,' which in modern parlance is understood as a proper name for Jesus, is derived from the Greek verb chrioo, 'anoint.' Jesus Christ is, therefore, properly "Jesus the Christ," an expression that speaks of God's supreme appointment of Jesus to the task of the salvation of all humankind.
