One of the two disciples whom Jesus met when they journeyed to the village of Emmaus on the day of Jesus' resurrection (Lk 24:18). The other disciple is not named.
The name is the masculine version of Cleopatra, meaning "born of a well-known father."
Cleopas is often seen as a paradigm of the Christian who believes but has not understood clearly the substance of his faith or the full significance of the hope that is his in Christ—"How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" Jesus asked them (vv25-26)—but who, as a result of being properly taught and the Scriptures opened to them, has his "eyes opened" and his "hearts burning within us" (v32).
