Grammatically speaking, conjunctions are words that join other words together. Examples in the English language includes 'and,' 'but,' 'although,' 'for,' 'therefore,' etc. The relationship between the two words (or phrases, clauses, even sentences) so conjoined depends on the conjunction used.
A. Coordinating conjunctions
B. Subjugating conjunctions subsumes one item to another.
C. Contrasting conjunctions
It is important to remember that in some languages, such relationships can be expressed by ways other than specific conjunctions. In biblical Hebrew, e.g., an adversertive relationship, e.g., is indicated by pairing the conjunction with a non-verb.
