The native Egyptic language, of which there were two main dialects, Sahadic and Bohairic. The Bohairic was mainly spoken in lower (i.e., northern) Egypt and the most developed so that it later became synonymous with the term Coptic. The term Copt, on the other hand, refers nowadays to a descendent of ancient Christian Egyptians, and the Coptic Church a vital and often persecuted institution.
