The study or science of the universe as a whole is called cosmology. Cosmogony is the theory or explanations of the universe's origin, and includes the ancient stories and myths found in most cultures to explain how the universe came into existence.
The Bible has little interest in cosmogony, except in its affirmation that everything owe their origin to God, an affirmation implicit in the creedal assertion that He is "the Maker of heaven and earth" (see, e.g., the Apostles' Creed).
Ancient Israel, however, was surrounded by nations who had their own cosmogonic myths, the most famous of which are those from Babylon, the Enuma elish and the Atrahasis Epic. For discussion on suggestions that the Old Testament may be dependent on, or have borrowed from, these myths, see the links above.
