The Church of St John Lateran is a major Roman Catholic basilica in the city of Rome (so named because it is located in the district of Lateran); it is, therefore, not uncommon for important councils to meet there. At least five major councils, called to resolve different concerns, were held there, in 1123, 1138, 1179, 1215, and 1512.
