Creatio ex nihilo

Latin for "creation out of nothing."

This expression is more Greek than Hebrew, but the idea is fundamentally Old Testament. It is the theological bedrock of everything the OT teaches about God and His acts on human behalf. Some commentators have sought to base their understanding of this concept in the Hebrew verb bara', 'created,' used in Gen 1:1; such a claim, however, cannot be sustained. This, however, has little impact on the theological groundedness of the concept in the OT.

For more on this, see commentary on Gen 1:1 and Alberith Hebrew Wordbook on bara'.
