Origin
The origin of the Christian Church in Egypt is shrouded in mystery. Jews from Egypt were present on the great day of Pentecost (Acts 2:10); it is plausible that some of them may have become followers of Christ and brought the gospel back to Egypt with them. Traditions also tell of Mark being instrumental in planting the church there. None of these suggestions can, however, be held with certainty.
Whatever its origin, the Egyptian Church soon became one of the most influential, and the city of Alexandria became its theological and cultural centre.
