Jim Elliot

US missionary to the Auca Indians of Ecuado. Soon after the first sightings was made of the secretive and much feared Indian tribe, Jim and four of his coworkers of the Auca Missionary Foundation flew their little plane into the jungle, landing on a sand bar on a river, to attempt to contact them. Instead all of them were savaged and murdered by the Indians. Their deaths, which seemed so wasteful and senseless at the time (1956), however, led to the Aucas' eventual coming to Christ.

The story of the Auca Indians and Jim Elliot and his companions' part in their conversion is told with verve in Elizabeth Elliot, Through Gates of Splendour (Republished, Milton Keynes: Authentic Media, 2005).
