Ellipsis

Ellipsis is the name give to the practice of omitting certain words when joining phrases and clauses together because they can be assumed and to avoid repetition. Often this has the effect of focusing the reader's attention on new material. In the following examples, the words in brackets are often omitted.

Although (he was) told to stop, he continued singing.

The detectives rounded up the men (who were) in the factory for further questioning.

I am happy to take this if you are (happy).

David may forgive you, but I don't think he will (forgive you).
