Elymas is probably the nickname of the man named Bar-Jesus, the "Jewish sorcerer and false prophet" whom Paul and Barnabas met on the island of Cyprus during their first missionary journey. He had attempted to opposed them when Sergius Paulus, the proconsul of the island, had summoned them "because he wanted to hear the word of God" (Acts 13:7). Filled with the Holy Spirit, Paul caused Elymas to be blinded for a time, for his opposition to God's work. Seeing what had happened, Sergius Paulus believed. Elymas' opposition became the very instrument through which God would accomplished what he opposed. Luke does not report what happened to Elymas subsequently.
