Endor

A small town located about six kilometers south of Mount Tabor on the eastern end of the Valley of Jezreel. It was allocated to the tribe of Manasseh by Joshua, but "the Manassites were not able to occupy these towns, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that region. However, when the Israelites grew stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labor but did not drive them out completely" (Jos 17:11-12). There can be little doubt that the witch of Endor, whom Saul sought to consult a spirit when Yahweh did not answer him, was the remnant of these Canaanite stock (2 Sam 28:7).

Endor appears only once more, in Psm 83:10, in which the psalmist looked back to the Lord delivered Israel from the attacks of the nations round about, and Endor is mentioned in the context of the attack by Sisera and Jabin, who perished there.
